Kidney stones are estimated to develop in one in 10 people. This condition is most prevalence among those in the 30 – 45 years age group. Kidney stones are accumulation of mineral or organic substances in the kidneys. More that 80% of the cases are due the presence of to high calcium oxalate in the kidney.

Some kidney stones can be very small like grains of salt which do not present much of a problem. However, kidney stones that grow large enough to block the flow of urine to the ureter can cause excruciating pain. So how do we prevent kidney stones from forming?

1. Drink Lemons/Lime Juice Daily

Lemons/lime has a high concentration of citrate which is a natural inhibitor of stone formation. Studies has shown that drinking four ounces of lemon juice in two liters of water per day can decrease the formation of kidney stones by more than 80 percent.

The citric acid in lemon/lime binds with the calcium in the urine thereby reducing the amount of calcium available to form calcium oxalate. It also prevents the oxalate crystals from massing together to form bugger stones.

2. Drink Lots Of Water Daily

Drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water every day will flush the kidney of small crystals thus preventing kidney stones from forming. Fruits with high water content such as watermelons, celery and cucumbers can also help to flush the kidneys.

3. Reduce Salt Intake

Salt is something which we need in our diet. But an excess of salt can cause high blood pressure and increase the risk of getting kidney stones. A number of studies has shown that a reduction in salt intake can reduce calcium excretion in the kidneys, thereby reducing the occurrence of kidney stones.

Too much salt can put a strain on the kidneys which tries to dilute the salt in your blood stream. Continuous long term excessive salt intake will eventually damage the kidney
